Groundfloor Guemes

We're a community outreach group within the Guemes Island Community Center Association. We strive to support environmental and economic sustainability within our community while supporting island non-profit groups and projects.   We meet on an “as needed” basis, supporting four main projects and others as needs arise.  Our current projects include the creation and distribution of Welcome Bags for new island members, the annual Earth Day Weekend Island Clean Up project, the Annual Strawberry Sunday Social on Father’s Day, and facilitating the ordering and distribution of organic food obtained through the Azure Standard  company.  We are also beginning a new project to monitor the water level in designated island wells in order to add to the data recorded in past years.  For more information or to become involved with the group, please contact Holly Green at Hbgreen50 @gmail.com or Edie Clark by sending an email to bneclark@gmail.com.

  • Welcome Bags  Groundfloor Guemes would like to extend a warm welcome to our new Guemes Island neighbors on behalf of the entire community!  We have prepared a small tote (welcome bag) with information to help new islanders become acquainted with our community. If you're a new island resident, or you know someone who is, please contact Cynthia Heft at heftdesign@comcast.net or Edie Clark at bneclark@gmail.com.. We look forward to meeting you!

  • Organic Food Procurement  You are invited to join our effort to bring organic food to our pantries in an affordable and convenient way.  We support the purchase and distribution of organic and sustainable products from Azure.

Products ordered from Azure are delivered monthly to a drop site in the town of Anacortes. Groundfloor has organized a system of cooperative-buying, whereby small orders can be combined to avoid a “minimum-amount” service charge Groundfloor members pick up the orders at the drop site and bring them back to the island for distribution. Participants pay only the purchase price of the items ordered.

Islanders may participate in this program in one of two ways.  Information about the Azure company and the catalog of available items can be reviewed at AzureStandard.com.. If you would like more information about participation in the island buying and distribution group, please contact Marianne Kooiman at eyrie@cnw.com or Edie Clark at bneclark@gmail.com.

Island Clean Up Day

Many hands working together for 2 hours on a Saturday near the time of the world-wide celebration of Earth Day rid our island of the debris that collects along our island beaches and the trash that appears on our island roadways and parking lots.  It has become a fun and productive event.  Skagit County helps us with this event by loaning long-handled tongs and by collecting the trash and debris and hauling it off the island.

Strawberry Sunday Social

This event, held on Father’s Day at the Community Center, provides a joyful and delicious opportunity for a visit with island neighbors over a bowl of strawberries and ice cream.  The activities of an island non-profit group are highlighted at the event, and all proceeds from the event are donated to that group.
